Sterling Silver Post Earrings

Sterling Silver Post Earrings- I am always searching for ways to incorporate texture into my designs.  These earrings began with a 3" x 3" piece of sterling silver sheet, which I reticulated, a process that I describe in detail below The texture created in this process cannot be duplicated - but it always so cool to watch the ebb and flow of liquid silver on top of the sheet! I hand cut two discs of this wonderfully textured silver, juxtaposed with two smaller, discs left smooth for contract. Tiny sterling silver rings connect the two, which are soldered closed. The earrings hang from a sterling silver post, and close securely with a sterling silver ear clutch.  Such subtle, but lovely movement from these earrings when worn..

After fabrication, I tumbled the sterling silver to achieve a beautiful shine and incredible strength. The earrings measure 1 1/4" in length, and the largest disc is just 3/4" round.

All metals used in this design are .925 sterling silver.

Reticulated Silver. Sterling silver is an alloy that contains silver and copper. Reticulation is a continuous process of heating/quenching/cleaning the metal to concentrate the copper to the core, surrounded by a layer of fine silver.  Because copper has a higher melting temperature than silver, when the prepared metal is torched with a very hot flame and moved across the metal, the copper core can be brought to a melting point, creating a liquid contained within the silver skin on top. The path and angle of the flame affects the textures created and the resulting patterns are often described as similar to  a relief map of expansive mountain ranges. There is only 100 degrees F or so between the melting points for the skin (silver)  and the interior (copper) …it’s pretty easy to burn a hole right through the sheet of metal.

Jewelry is made using traditional metalworking techniques, including soldering, filing, sanding, texturing, polishing, and tumbling in my home studio. Jewelry comes wrapped in a cotton-lined gift box and ships quickly. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

NOTE: 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these earrings will be donated to Miracle Horse Rescue, a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping me help those who cannot help themselves!
