Reticulated Silver Diamond Shaped Pendant Necklace

in: Necklace

Reticulated Silver Diamond Shaped Pendant Necklace - I am always searching for ways to incorporate texture into my designs.  This pendant began with a 3" x 3" piece of sterling silver sheet, which I reticulated, a process that I describe in detail below The texture created in this process cannot be duplicated - but it always so cool to watch the ebb and flow of liquid silver on top of the sheet! After the reticulation process, I hand cut two little diamond shapes - one slightly smaller than the other, and connected the diamonds with sterling silver rings - soldered closed for security.

This is one of those necklaces that can be worn with jeans or a black dress!

The pendant measures just under 2" in length by 5/8" in width at its widest point.  After fabrication, the pendant was buffed and polished by hand, oxidized to further enhance the details in the texture, and tumbled for durability, shine, and a lovely patina.  The lightweight pendant hangs from an 18" patterned and oxidized cable chain, which closes securely with a lobster clasp.

All metals used in this design are .925 sterling silver.

Reticulated Silver. Sterling silver is an alloy that contains silver and copper. Reticulation is a continuous process of heating/quenching/cleaning the metal to concentrate the copper to the core, surrounded by a layer of fine silver.  Because copper has a higher melting temperature than silver, when the prepared metal is torched with a very hot flame and moved across the metal, the copper core can be brought to a melting point, creating a liquid contained within the silver skin on top. The path and angle of the flame affects the textures created and the resulting patterns are often described as similar to  a relief map of expansive mountain ranges. There is only 100 degrees F or so between the melting points for the skin (silver)  and the interior (copper) …it’s pretty easy to burn a hole right through the sheet of metal.

Jewelry is made using traditional metalworking techniques, including soldering, filing, sanding, texturing, polishing, and tumbling in my home studio. Jewelry comes wrapped in a cotton-lined gift box and ships quickly. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
